Capturing the Inexpressible: Mindfulness and Poetry

Updated: Apr 16

Open Book

My formal study of poetry ended with my GCSEs. This be the verse did me well over my difficult teenage years but with time poetry has had an increasing emotional impact on me beyond anger and angst.

Mindfulness and poetry are well-suited bedfellows. It would be impossible to teach mindfulness without at the very least appreciating that poetry can emotionally impact many. Often a poem can explore experience powerfully and offer glimpses of truth unavailable to simple description. Whilst mindfulness allows us to see and sit with the inexpressible, poetry uses language to intimate it.

The poems below have resonated with my experience of mindfulness over the years.

I'd love to know your thoughts and hear any suggestions you have. Please leave a comment.
